I worked at Active Health Services (AHS) for a year and a half after graduating Physiotherapy School. I was very happy working here and the found the transition from being a student to a Physiotherapist a lot easier than expected with support from both the admin team and senior Physiotherapists. The orientation programme was a good chance to gradually get to know the systems and processes while slowly increasing my case load. The environment is such that I always felt comfortable asking for help, expressing concerns or offering ideas. Timaru is a small enough community that you see a wide variety of conditions and the entire population from school kids to elderly. This has allowed me to develop a broad skill base and feel confident treating all kinds of conditions from acute to chronic. AHS run a weekly in-service in all aspects of clinical practice from journal clubs to manual therapy sessions, these are an opportunity to share skills and discuss relevant research as it applies to us in our daily practice. I would recommend anyone to work at AHS as the clinic and facilities are great, the staff have good times (both in and out of work), the work experience is excellent and the lifestyle the South Canterbury region offers makes the experience enjoyable.

Life in New Zealand is pretty sweet. Everyone at the clinic has been great to me since I got here e.g. I’ve been to more bbq’s since I arrived than I’ve ever been to in my whole life (in just 2 months!!). The team is incredibly supportive, positive, and good fun too, which makes for an ideal working environment, because it IS pretty daunting – jumping into what is a tricky, comprehensive area of physio – lets not forget that! In-services have been really helpful too for giving new ideas for assessment/treatment. In general, groceries are bit cheaper than at home, just got a car too and running it is much easier than in Britain. I’ve also found using sports facilities cheaper too, which is great! Weather has been fantastic – hit 35OC the other week! – though its getting colder with daylight saving time now under way. It is hard being so far from Scotland (and home) but I’ve had pretty much free use of laptops & internet at the clinic to email family & friends, etc, so you feel less far away.
